What a great set this is!I ordered this for a 8 year old who loves geology and archeology etc, I think this interest has been formed from a long project on Egypt etc at school.You of course have to ‘dig’ out the gemstone and tools are supplied but of course you can use anything you want to help with this. This part of the process is quite involved and slightly messy. We set ours on a large serving tray which helped catch most of the dust, then used the vacuum for the remaining dust.The digging process will take around 45 – 90 minutes depending on your child but keeps them interested throughout.Once all dust is cleaned away etc you can use the display stand which plugs into the mains, or powerbank if you have one, to light up the display, this works well and looks really good. There is a switch on the USB power cable, to switch the display on and off so no messing with mains switches or plugs etc. I thought this was a nice touch.A really good set that we can all recommend

This is a lovely set. The extraction is a really fun part, little one loved every second and found it very exciting. Then comes the second burst of excitement, creating the lamp and the third turning the lights off and turning the lamp on! Such a joy and an engaging, exciting and rewarding experience for kids. Such a beautiful lamp as an end result. Excellent value for this much fun!

A better than your usual fare dig a gem kit. I think this would suit 5-10 years if the child likes digging for treasure and unusual rocks! Younger children will definitely need help with the excavating, either start them of or dampen the block slightly to make it easier. It comes with little tools but you can use what works for you, my son liked a spoon for some of it - I'd recommend doing it on a surface you can easily sweep or wipe as the sand gets everywhere. This particular set stands out because it comes with a little display rack to put your finds on, which you can then also light up (usb powered). A great winters day activity.

My daughter loved making this crystal display! It also looks great on her bed side table. You get everything you need to 'dig' the gems out of some 'rock'. You get all the tools you need and then also a lovely stand and lights to display the gems! Great set at a good price!

This is a great gem dig kit for young fans. My daughter loves this sort of thing and the fact that after digging and discovering the treasures, you can then create a light to show off the gemstones, certainly lifts this above others we've had in the past.I think some parental help is required, (especially with younger children and setting up the lighting part), plus as the light is USB powered you will need to supply a suitable UK plug connection (or if possible a power bank could be used though I haven't tested this yet).Overall though, this is a great set for young fans of gemstones.

A good fun excavation activity for the kids.Tools are provided to help chip away and expose the gem stones.When cleaned the gem stones can be lit up with the provided wooden block and led light.The light needs to be powered by a USB power source and is nice an bright and can be used with other gems stones or semi transparent plastics.
