Hopefully after a few years of use I haven't jumped the gun with my review. The single plate plug in machine has proved invaluable to me after the extinction of an old cooker. Having a microwave and halogen I oven I decided to try this for a while before deciding upon a full replacement. The machine is suitably stable to hold heavy pots and happily coped with a pressure cooker. The side rails provide a safety aspect. The ring itself is solid. It takes a little while to heat to full ability but this is seldom required as the retained heat is long lasting and should be taken into account when timing the cooking process. The display light indicates when the electricity is being used and then subsequently turns off when the desired level is obtained thus conserving electrical use. The sliding heat knob is sensitive and once got used to the adjustment is easy. My two reservations are the option of utensil use. I wouldn't use a small milk pan for example as the heat loss would be be uneconomical . The second issue is cleaning. I strongly recommend that this is done soon after the heat has subsided sufficiently for safety. Food will adhere as it seals with the heat. On the upside the residual heat after cooking can be used to aid the cleaning processby adding water and washing up liquid if no dishwasher is available. The heat remains for some 20 minutes after turning off so be sure to utilize this for on going simmering. Very portable if needed to use in other rooms or caravans etc. Would recommend.

After four months I am more ecstatic about my Duronic HP1 Hotplate than on its first use. Primarily because it has worked consistently very well and cooks wonderfully. A big plus, it is a doddle to clean, to my standards at least.My rising rapture comes from ten years of cooking exclusively with a combination microwave, another excellent device. But now I can have perfectly cooked soft and hard boiled eggs rather than the unpredicted snowstorms of exploded egg following a failed new microwave technique. Now I can savour a fabulous fried egg instead of the Saturn simulacrum of rock solid centre with annuli of opaque white and glassy goo.But the HP1 is beyond egg-cellent at cooking. It easily copes with a 28cm sauté pan almost full of casserole, its 18cm plate delivering a steady heat to the 17cm base of the pan. I assume steady because the plate takes multiple minutes to cool down, implying the ability to hold a near even temperature. By contrast the HP1 is quick to reach the requested temperature, the oil hot in a pan before I can peel and chop an onion. I appreciate that is a subjective quantification. Thus far I have never needed to go to the Max, only turning the temperature knob up to midway between Min and Max.However, the knob draws attention to the one drawback of the HP1 – no on/off switch. There may well be zero amps flowing at Off on the dial, but want to hear a comforting click. Without a switched mains supply requires, to my super-safety-conscious thinking, unplugging the hob after use. This is made easier with the HP1 having a contoured plug. So, not a big hassle.Returning to what the hot plate is not about, the underside remains comfortably hand cool while in use (do not verify this while in pan-use). Also staying cool, surprisingly, are the handles along either side. I can glove-free, unhurriedly move it from its cooking position to the out of the way cooling place. A fanciful way of saying I lift it 30cm to the back of the work surface.Occasionally the HP1 comes forward, unplugged, to get a once-over with a cleaning cloth. All required parts are easy to reach without bruising one’s knuckles. The only shy corner is where the plate riser joints the flat top. Not so much scrubbing up well, as wiping up well. Albeit after a few uses when the irritating yellow sticky label has curled off the top, leaving the more irritating glue needing to be rubbed off. My HP1 is still looking so smart and stylish that it can be used as a dining-table food warmer, though I’d suggest a heat-resistant mat on any Thomas Sheraton mahogany.The plate is solid, so pans that convex their bottom with heat become unstable and less efficient. As well as pans matching the HP1’s plate diameter, smaller footprint items also work fine. This has allowed me to enjoy coffee from my hitherto unusable espresso coffee maker (shaped like an angular metal egg-timer). I’ll probably save this underutilisation of the hob’s heating power for winter when its excess radiation can help warm my small kitchen.The Duronic HP1 Hotplate is an excellent device in every sense for its purpose, except for no on/off click.

Prety good. I like that handle doesn't get hot. Small, easy to storage. Could be a bit more powerfull.

Saved me so much money on cooking bills!I bought this nearly 3 years ago. It hasn't failed me once. It's so powerful & heats up very swiftly. I've saved so much money not having a cooker because this little contraption keeps cooking way after it's turned off. After about a month it was super easy to judge turning it off about 10mins prior to end of cooking.

AN EXCELLENT EXTRA COOKER SHOULD YOU NEED ONE. TAKES UP VERY LITTLE SPACE & WORKS EVERY WELL. Gets HOT FAIRLY QUICKLY - and autmatiaclly cools beyond a certain temeperature. Great item to take camping or to use as you daily hot plate. I have been using it daily for a few months now without any issues whatsoever. Easy to clean - but remeber to switch it off after at the plug socket.

Should be renamed to "tepid plate". Before getting hot enough to get a decent sizzle, the thermostat cuts out. Could easily lift food out of a pan that had sat on it for over 20 minutes with my bare fingers. You'd have just as much success cooking food on your radiators....

Its not ideal for indian style cooking. Cuts off when too hot so takes ages to cook.

I'm really glad I chose this slightly dearer and slightly larger one hob than others on the market.It's quality, and the size of the hob is necessarily larger than most. I also use tiny pans on it without problem. I was initially concerned about reviews which, correctly, said it takes a very long time to heat. But this problem soon overcame itself after the first few uses, which also dissipated the factory smell.I've relied on this for a few months for a 2-person family. Nothing compares to my broken full cooker. However, it looks kinda 70s cool and is functional (I think the handles actually act well as a guard) and is easy to clean. I always unplug after use because the on knob combines with the temperature knob, so I wouldn't want to risk it being accidentally turned on.
