A Heroic Tale
Carole Boston Weatherford has written several children’s books on the civil rights movement but none come close to the heroically inspirational tale she tells of Harriet Tubman. Weatherford created a masterpiece by thematically combining one woman’s fight to free her self, her family, and her people from slavery with a religious faith that burned as bright as the torch of liberty.Weatherford brilliantly captures this faith on every page with an ongoing dialogue between Harriet and the Lord. “By moonlight, she marches on, making her way mile after rugged mile, hiding in haystacks, attics, and barns, holding God’s hand all the while. She often wearies. ‘How far Lord?’ ‘As far as you can walk with me, my child, and I can carry you.’”Harriet’s harrowing escape from slavery will keep readers on the edge of their seats. But it is just the beginning. Harriet transforms into a biblical Moses as she returns 19 times to free hundreds of her people from slavery – truly a heroic tale. Her faith in the Lord is the very embodiment of our national motto, “In God We Trust.”Kadir Nelson’s art is a perfect match for Weatherford’s words. Young readers (and old!) will enjoy finding all the hidden animals in the forest on one of the double-page spreads. But to really appreciate this Caldecott Honor Book, note how Harriet’s flight to freedom is illustrated almost entirely in dark, double-page spread but ends with the gorgeously lit picture of Harriet as she asks, “Is this heaven, Lord?” And the Lord answers, “Not heaven, Harriet, FREE SOIL.”#self-reliance#liberty#allcreatedequal#ingodwetrust#life

Inspirational book for kids
I would give the book itself 5 stars. It's a very inspirational message for children, that their faith in the Lord can guide them through anything, and with beautiful pictures filled with emotion. After we studied the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman, I got it for my 10 yr old daughter who has a strong faith in Jesus yet can still struggle with fear and anxiety at times. My only complaint is, upon opening the package, I discovered the corner of the book was damaged and there was a small tear on the paper cover of the book.

An Excellent Retelling of the Powerful Life of Ms. Harriet Tubman
The author states that this story is fiction, based upon truth. No one, including the author could know for certain God’s exact words or impressions as the Holy Spirit guided Mrs. Harriet Tubman. But to leave God out of Ms. Tubman’s story or even to relegate Him to the sidelines would be nothing short of a lie, as Ms. Tubman herself spoke constantly of her reliance upon and faith in God to lead and help her. I applaud this author and illustrator for keeping alive the powerful story of the life of Ms. Harriet Tubman.

Good book but wanted more substance and history
I was excited for this book to read to my elementary students. The pictures were beautiful and some of the lines were wonderful, but the story could have been more factual. As a person of faith I have no issues with all of the spiritual talk, however, it confused my students. I have students of many different religions in my class, I had to sop throughout the story and fill in, trying to explain to them the story. The language was in between poetry and a fictional story, it was just too much. My kids began to get bored quickly, it was way too deep for them. I wanted it to explain more about the Underground Railroad and the history of it. My students did learn about Tubman somewhat. However, I will be purchasing another book which explains with more detail what it was and who she was. I love a beautiful book but wish others had said the limitations to this book, especially when reading in a classroom setting.

ESOL teachers, take a look at this book!
I bought this to give to an adult English as a Second Language student. She absolutely adores it. We've read it twice. It made her cry because she sympathizes with Harriet so much. And my student is very religious, so she loves Harriet talking with God. It also encouraged her in her own writing. The illustrations are beautiful and tell the story even without the words - good for teaching extensive reading.I can't say how the book would go over with kids, but this teacher and her low intermediate student give it four enthusiastic thumbs up.

I found this book amazing, it's an inspiration to adults not just the children. I really love how the illustration brought the words to life.Every good parent or carer should have a copy of this book.

Powerful history lesson, we love it
Beautiful images & story is strong! My 9yr old really enjoyed this book as he enjoys learning about history. He’s a quarter black and I want him to know how powerful he can be on his own & believing in a higher power to guide oneself.
