I have not noticed this pillow to become hot. It is a bit hard, not firm but hard. I have an extremely long neck so I find it comfy!

Q: Is the pillow itself machine washable?

I would refere you to the company. I do not remember the directions. I have not used my new pillow long enough that it needs to machine washed. As I look at the foam core I would think it would need to be hand washed due to its bulky body.
