Q: How suitable is this kit for a rank beginner?

Every one who builds wood ship models was a first time modeler.We deal with tens of thousands of ship modelers world wide. Everyone of them learned to build the hard way ... through practice. The biggest mistake anyone can make is to buy an expensive complex ship model kit for the first attempt. The longboat is as easy as it gets .... and that does not mean it is easy. Working in wood and planking a hull is a far cry from assembling a plastic model. It requires focused attention, the patience to go slow and easy and a willingness to tear down your work and restart when a beam is out of alignment or a plank hasn't set properly. In the case of the longboat we have gone to great lengths to take you step by step through the process with 20 pages of photos and detailed plans. If you take your time, dedicate an hour or two each day you can build a fine model in 4 to 6 weeks and then be ready for the larger kits. In the end the satisfaction is enormous as no two models will ever be exactly a like.

Q: Are any other supplies needed?

Yes ... ideally you'll need the tools found in the Model Expo Deluxe Modeling Tool Set ..no. MT9001 available on Amazon Prime. Also, you'll need either Elmers' wood glue or any cynoacrylate glue.

Q: How do you bend the wood tor tye hull

Experienced shipwrights take the planks to be used for the hull and soak the ends of them overnight in a coffee can or plastic container. The next day pin them down on a wood board in the approximate shape of the front of the hull. When they dry they will easily conform to the bend you are looking for. Another way is to purchase our Plank Bender tool on Amazon. With the tool you soak the plank for a few minutes and then apply the hot iron to the plank in the wood mold that is supplied with the tool. Above all, be patient and build slowly and carefully.

Q: Why the two sets of false keel?

We erred in excess. You only need one. Keep it just in case.
