A Holier Grail

I started wet shaving with a traditional double-edged safety razor in June of last year—or rather, that was the first time I truly succeeded at it. I had experimented before with various razors, but most of them ended up shearing my face. The only one I found safe to use was the Merkur Open Comb 9104001 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R21LFY5ZNW75AS/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00595BY6U). Once I got comfortable with that and my technique improved, I decided to try something just a little more aggressive. That’s when I stumbled upon the Vikings Blade Chieftain on Amazon. When I checked discussions on razor enthusiast forums like Reddit, I found the reviews to be mixed. There was some condescension towards the Vikings Blade brand, with speculation that it was just a dressed-up Baili product (but hey, isn't Apple a dressed-up Foxconn product in some sense?) but I felt that the positive reviews rang true. The brand’s presentation—while maybe a little over the top—somehow resonated with me as light-hearted pride for a good product, and I decided to go for it.Now, the Chieftain has become my daily driver. The build quality is outstanding—exceptionally solid and well-constructed. It provides a close and comfortable shave, and I almost never nick myself. That said, I do use Shark Stainless Blades, which are relatively mild, so that likely contributes to the smooth experience.Having gone from one Holy Grail to another, I think the search for the perfect razor is either never-ending excitement or pointless extravagance. I'm happy to call my Vikings Blade Chieftain a long-term solution for my simple needs: a quick, safe, effective and economical alternative to the cartridges I used before. It’s a well-made, forgiving razor that delivers a great shave, making it an excellent choice for those looking for something slightly more aggressive than an entry-level model without venturing into borderline weaponry.

Viking Chieftain Gave Me A Good Shave!

This review was originally sent to Julian Vue.I used my new Viking Chieftain razor for the first time this morning. It gave me a good shave! And, that's all I ask for.The Viking Chieftain is replacing a very expensive 'Merkur Vision' razor purchased 3-years ago. I'm very disappointed with my Merkur experience. I'd hoped buying from a well-established firm would at least assure the razor was made from quality materials. Not 'Pot-Metal' that begins to disintegrate the moment it's taken from the package. I don't believe it was an unrealistic expectation, considering the hefty price tag I paid? And yes, I followed the maintenance instructions that came with the razor to a 'T'. Including soaking in a mild vinegar solution once a month to ward-off the corrosive effects of the water. It's odd that you would need to do this with an item 'made' to be used in water and/or a wet environment? The Blade Height adjustment mechanism stopped working 20-months ago. My Old Gillette DE razors were made from brass (brass alloy?) and chrome-plated. Nothing fancy, and they lasted forever. The Viking Chieftain states on the UPC label affixed to the shipping box it comes in " NEW Swedish Materials, Forged in PRC" (People's Republic of China). Julian suggested I scratch the surface Chrome away to assure myself the 'parent material' is in-fact a Brass/Bronze alloy; it is a Brass colored metal! Without a Materials Testing Laboratory it's a little hard to confirm my findings, but I believe it is made from exactly the material as stated on the box. Be aware, there are other versions of this razor made from inferior materials. READ AS: Pot Metal! The following is probably more information than any of you need and I'm sure everyone around the world performs the 'ritual' in a similar manner. Here's my way. After removing from the box, the initial cleaning included washing the razor with hot-water, soap, and little alcohol rinse, I lubricated it with Oster Electric Shaver oil and inserted one of the unmarked, 'generic' blades that came with razor. The Butterfly mechanism opens and closes smoothly, and it holds the blade securely. That's important! The 'Butterfly mechanism' MUST hold the blade tightly. You don't want it wiggling and shifting around, cutting the heck out of your face, while you're shaving, do you?!I then followed my 'normal routine', the same procedure I've done for decades. My 'technique' (such as it is) starts with shaving after I shower. I've learned over the years hot water in the shower helps soften my rather stiff beard. I also use a Shaving Scuttle and Soap-Cup from 'Dirty Bird Pottery' along with CELLA, Crema Sapone Extra Purissima shaving soap. Cella Sapone is relatively cheap and I can buy it in 1 kilo blocks. It also keeps well in the freezer and retains its freshness. I simply cut-off slabs as-needed. This is the only shaving product I use. K.I.S.S. is my mantra. The Scuttle and Soap-Cup are filled with hottest tap water I have and I let the brush and the razor soak and warm-up in the Scuttle. At the same time, the Cella soap in the Soap-Cup, softens and also 'warms-up'. The 'key' is getting everything as 'hot/warm' as possible. The whole process only adds about 10 - 15 minutes more to my morning. It sounds more complicated than it really is.Leaving my face wet from the shower, I lather-up and begin shaving. First, I go in the direction of my beard's grain. Then, I lather-up again, but only my neck and repeat the process. Except this time, I go against the grain. My neck has two particularly tough patches on either-side of my Adam's Apple, about collar height. It required going over the area a couple of times with the Viking Chieftain to get it smooth. Guess what? I have to do that with EVERY razor I use! Nothing new.The actual shave was quite comfortable. I experienced no nicks, cuts, or razor burns. The handle is shorter then I'm used to, but I quickly got the hang of it. Reminds me of my Grand Dad's old Gillette. Makes 'cutting-in' my beard very easy. I like the feel and weight of the Chieftain and the handle texture allows for a solid purchase. The whole razor is very nimble to use in my hand. The Chrome finish is attractive and should last.Overall, I pleased with my purchase. And, I would urge anyone who is considering this razor to contact Julian Vue and let him explain a little about his product. I can only speak about my own experiences, but so far, I'm a happy camper. I promised Julian if this razor lasts longer than 3-years, I come back and upgrade this review with 5-Stars.A Happy Customer.
