Excellent for Teacher Leaders and Administrators to Lead Change
This IS a book about pedagogy. Focused on the philosophy and structuring of Differentiated Instruction, Carol Tomlinson commented that this should have been her first book on Differentiation. The anecdotes and real world examples clarify theory into practice. DI is presented within the context of quality instructional planning considerations. Highly recommended for Teacher Leaders and administrators to become the in-house support for their district and buildings. A variety of strategies with examples are provided in the appendix. I found it helpful with some of the book studies I've lead for districts and schools. If you're looking for the larger picture of the what and how of DI fits into curriculum, and why students respond as they do to instruction, this book is a perfect fit, especially if you have had some (minimal at least) background with DI in lesson planning. Otherwise, consider How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms by Tomlinson. It's an excellent primer someone looking for basic, basic understanding and where to begin the journey. In fact, get both books if you are just starting out. Fufilling the Promise appendices of strategies is one of the best available as it included classroom examples. Welcome to Differentiated Instruction. Students will gain greater benefits from your efforts.

This book is challenging
This book is informative, well organized and based on what really helps students. My biggest concern is that it is hard to find time to do "it all". This author encourages you to incorporate what you can and build on that. I am one of those people who played clarinet in high school. I can read music and know how to count the timing. But when I played a piece of music, I found myself reading the music but playing by ear to an extent. While I can understand a concept and can quote the steps and process the application has to be filtered through what works for me. So, even though I might be aware of the techniques she describes in fact what I do may not quiet match my plan. I think she would agree that you need to know and understand techniques and processes but you must be able to adapt it to your personality and that of your students.

I had to buy it
I had to buy this book for a graduate class in education. I didn't hate the price, and the figures have been helpful. However, I feel the language is a bit over the top for what it is. In the first chapter, there is a sentence that at first glance would appear to be a paragraph. If I counted correctly, this sentence contained seven prepositional phrases. It's unnecessary and makes the book frustrating to read. It reminds me of a professor I once had who lectured in the voice of Ben Stein and used words that do not belong in conversational speech. While I'm excited to learn more about differentiated instruction, this book is certainly not my motivation.

Essential for first year or fortieth year teachers!
I had to purchase this book for a graduate level class. I found the information in each chapter to be essential to my ability to be the best teacher I possibly can. This book is not catering towards students with learning disabilities or IEPs. It is aimed toward the modern day classroom where differences among students is inevitable. Besides providing information, it is also full of ideas with explanations to use in the classroom. From the familiar strategy of think-alouds to the not so familiar strategy of "mudied windsheilds", every teacher can take away something from this book. The very last chapter is dedicated to tools for teachers to use within the classroom. This is one book I will not be selling back.
