Teaching Essentials: Expecting the Most and Getting the Best from Every Learner, K-8

This book without a doubt, is the best "professional development" teaching book I have ever read. (And I read a lot!) It is a no-nonsense guide to effective teaching. She bases her book on the "Optimal Learning Model" which is basically a method of teaching that emphasizes the release of responsibility in an effective way (I do it, We do it, We do it, We do it, You do it). I have sticky note tabs on practically every page and I have underlined and written notes all over the poor book. I know for a fact that this book will improve my teaching. I can't wait to get started and try out some of her methods. This book has found a permanent place in my classroom where I can always access it.

I have had this copy for years and lost it during a move. I had to reorder. Ms. Routman gives a clear, concise picture of literacy in an elementary classroom. It is user friendly, providing important instructional concepts in a user friendly manner. Her words to a beginning teacher have resonated with me through many years of teaching. "Celebrate Life! Love this book- everyone should own a copy and try to practice the good teaching principles throughout the text. I borrowed a friend’s copy and knew I had to have my own.

I ordered this while working on my MAT degree. It's a must have for novice teachers as well as vets! Inspirational reading.

This is a wonderful and inspiring book for teachers. It helps you to remember why you wanted to teach in the first place and how to get back to doing what you love.
